PASS members in the Northwest Mountain region may not realize that they have a prolific author in their midst. Working in the IT field at the FAA, Jim E. Reames, Chapter NW3, spends his spare time writing—and publishing—his novels. Most recently, he has released his fifth novel titled “The Billionaire’s Son,” which is available for purchase as an e-book and paperback on Amazon.
The premise of Reames’ most recent novel may strike a chord with many members because it details a malware launched by the Russian mafia that attacks Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) computers. Their intent is to destroy the American dollar and derail the 2016 presidential election by disabling all Western civilization computers while leaving Russian and Chinese computers intact. The situation gets personal when the CIA cyber-security expert (Tom Belton) on the case realizes one of the hackers is a criminal from his past, one that he helped put in prison decades earlier.
“I wrote this book for three reasons,” said Reames. “The first is my personal hobby pursuit, writing action-packed fiction. The second is for pure reader entertainment. My third objective, for this particular novel, is to try and do for the cyber-security profession what the late Tom Clancy did for submarine warfare enlightenment.”
Reames began his data processing career in 1973 as a deputy sheriff tasked with developing, building and managing a multiagency police intelligence database. His research was picked up by the International Association of Chiefs of Police, and Reames was hired part time to teach seminars around the country. His research is known internationally and published by leading law enforcement magazines. His master’s degree thesis at Boise State University was on international terrorism, asymmetric war, and organized crime. He was hired by the FAA in 1998 and assigned to the FAA cyber-security division in 2003. He currently works as a remote “incident handler” at the Security Operations Center (SOC) in Leesburg, Va., out of the Flight Standards District Office in Boise, Idaho. Reames’ publications and research continue to be studied today, referenced by White House security experts, the West Point Military Academy and the Department of Homeland Security.
